There is a wide range of hiking paths of varying levels of difficulty in Merano’s surroundings so there is sure to be something to suit everyone.
The so-called "Waalwege" paths, running along ancient irrigation channels, are a great option for beginners and lead through beautiful unspoilt landscape. For instance, the Maiser Waalweg, is an easy path starting and ending in the village of Scena. Alternatively, take a stroll along the historic Tappeinerweg path which offers spectacular views over Merano and the Val d'Adige valley over a distance of 4 km.
The Meran 2000 hiking resort,you can easily access via the Meran 2000 cable car, and the spectacular Gruppo Tessa nature reserve offer an extensive range of hiking paths. For instance, take a tour to the village of Hafling, which is where the world-renowned Haflinger horses originate from.

The historic Maia Bassa racecourse is one of Merano's most interesting places and one of the most beautiful and most famous racecourses in Europe. The first race on the 5 km racetrack took place in 1935. The highlights of the season are the Haflinger gallop race on Easter Monday and the Gran Premio Merano, Italy's most prestigious steeplechase taking place on the last Sunday of September each year.
