After some mountaineering excursions in the surroundings of Merano with the help of the well organised public means having their halts just behind the corner of the MERANERHOF, today´s weather-forecast forced me to search for a lazy town exploration.
Overlooking the display in the hotel´s hall I found a leaflet titled -SISSI´S PATH- concerning a scenic route leading to the areas of town most beloved by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sissi.
This path dedicated to her connects the city centre with the botanical GARDENS of TRAUTTMANSDORFF Castle.
Along the promenade near the river the way reaches the wealthy parts of OBERMAIS with its castles and villas hidden in their own parks and it´s quite true what I have read in the last issue of the worldwide known magazine -Monocle-, that Obermais is a delightful real-life example of a Mitteleuropean neighbourhood that may be found in a 1930s storybook.
In the late afternoon during my way back to the Meranerhof I took a refreshing cup of the local - FORST- beer at the brewery´s restaurant in front of the liberty-styled Kurhaus (1914) making a summary of these superb impressions.
What a lucky rainy day, indeed!
