Autumn Magic in Merano: wine, culinary delights, and a symphony of colours

11Sep‘23

Autumn in Merano is a time of enchantment. The sun-kissed region of South Tyrol reveals its most beautiful side as the leaves on the trees slowly change their colours, and a hint of coolness fills the air. During this season, the town of Merano transforms into a true paradise for lovers of the good life, offering not only spectacular natural beauty but also an abundance of culinary delights and excellent wines.

Autumn is also the time of grape harvest in the surrounding vineyards, and the winemakers are in high spirits this year. The vintage promises to be particularly promising. The warm summer months have provided the grapes with plenty of sun and time to ripen to their full glory. Winemakers proudly speak of the quality of the harvest and the expected aromas that will develop in the wine.

In one of the picturesque wineries in the Merano area, I visited a friend who is a winemaker in his vineyard. The vines were laden with plump grapes glistening in the late summer sun. I admire the winemakers for their responsible and physically demanding work, which ultimately leads to good wine. My anticipation for this year's wine tastings is already high, and this year, along with our service team, I will sample some fine wines to ensure we always offer the best wines of our region in our wine list.

In addition to wine, Merano also has much to offer in terms of culinary delights in the autumn. The numerous restaurants and inns in the town are known for their regional specialties. South Tyrolean cuisine is distinguished by fresh ingredients and traditional recipes passed down through generations, such as “Schlutzkrapfen”, handmade pasta stuffed with spinach and ricotta cheese, served with melted butter and grated Parmesan. A glass of excellent white wine from the region pairs perfectly with this dish.

After a hearty meal, I enjoy strolling through the picturesque streets of Merano. The streets are lined with trees and flowers that shine in the most beautiful autumn colours. The warm afternoon sun bathes the town in a golden light, and you can feel the calm and serenity of the locals who savour life to the fullest.

In the evenings, I like to visit a cozy wine bar where I can sample the fruits of the winemakers' hard work. The selection ranges from fresh, fruity white wines to robust, complex red wines. Each wine tells its own story and reflects the uniqueness of the region.

Autumn in Merano is a feast for the senses. The splendour of nature's colours, the anticipation of the new wine vintage, and the culinary delights make this season an unforgettable experience. If you have the opportunity to visit Merano in the autumn, do not miss this magical time. You will be enchanted by the beauty of the region and pampered with culinary delights—a experience you will cherish forever.
