Sommer in Meran: Genießen Sie die herrliche Aussicht auf die malerische Stadt Meran und die umliegenden Berge

Whenever guests ask me at reception what they absolutely shouldn't miss during a summer holiday in Merano, I usually pause for a moment. Not because there aren't enough options – quite the opposite. There is simply so much to see and experience.

Of course, there are the well-known attractions such as the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle or the beautiful promenades along the Passer River. But in my experience, it is often the smaller, more authentic moments that make a holiday truly memorable.

That's why I would like to share some of my personal recommendations with you today.

Head for the mountains early – Before the heat arrives

During summer, it is well worth starting the day a little earlier.

One of my favourite moments is when the first rays of sunlight touch the mountain peaks around Merano and the hiking trails are still wonderfully quiet.

I often recommend Merano 2000, San Vigilio and the beautiful Ultental Valley to our guests. These areas offer countless hiking trails with spectacular views over the Adige Valley and the surrounding mountains.

If you enjoy discovering the region with a local, you are welcome to join one of our guided hikes. I personally lead a hike every Thursday from April until October. Together, we explore hidden trails, scenic viewpoints and special places that many visitors would otherwise miss. And of course, I am always happy to share a few insider tips along the way 😉.

Discover the region by e-bike

Many guests are surprised by how easy and enjoyable it is to explore the surroundings of Merano by bike.

With our new Cube E-Bikes, you can comfortably reach places that often feel much more rewarding by bicycle than by car.

Some of my favourite routes include:

  • the cycle path into the Passeier Valley

  • the bike trails along the Adige River

  • a tour through the beautiful Spring Valley near Lake Caldaro

  • quiet country roads winding through vineyards and apple orchards

Cooling off on hot summer days

When temperatures rise, there are plenty of ways to cool down around Merano.

Many guests enjoy visiting one of the mountain lakes nearby or exploring the traditional irrigation paths, known as Waalwege, where flowing water and shaded paths provide a refreshing escape from the heat.

Sometimes, however, a leisurely walk along the Passer River is all you need – especially on the Summer Promenade. Or perhaps a quiet afternoon at one of the mountain huts, many of which can be reached comfortably by cable car and a short walk.

After activity comes indulgence

One of the best things about an active holiday in South Tyrol is the reward afterwards.

After a hike or a bike ride, I also enjoy a relaxed evening with good food, a glass of wine or a refreshing beer.

Merano offers plenty of excellent options.

Pizza lovers will find everything from traditional thin-crust pizza to authentic Neapolitan-style creations with a soft, airy crust.

For pasta and classic Italian dishes, my personal favourite is Trattoria Flora, tucked away beneath Merano's historic arcades 😉.

If you would prefer to discover traditional South Tyrolean cuisine, feel free to stop by reception. I am always happy to share a few local favourites that are not found in every guidebook.

Or simply stay at the Meranerhof and enjoy an evening of fine dining. Every day, our kitchen serves a different five-course gourmet menu. Head Chef Vito and his team create beautifully presented dishes using regional ingredients and carefully selected flavours. A true feast for both the eyes and the palate 😋.

My personal summer tip

Keep it simple. Sometimes less really is more.

The moments that stay with us are often the simplest ones: a leisurely breakfast without looking at the clock, a scenic walk with beautiful views, a bike ride through blooming landscapes, or an evening aperitif on the Meranerhof terrace with loved ones – or simply a good book.

That is what summer in Merano is all about.

And if the sun decides to take a short break, don't worry. I have plenty of recommendations for rainy days as well. I will share my personal bad-weather tips in November's blog article.

Until then, I look forward to sharing many more personal recommendations with you during your stay.

Warm greetings from Merano,
