Shades of white and pink... just wow!
THE POPULAR APPLE BLOSSOM IN MERANO AND ENVIRONS
In spring, a truly special natural spectacle takes place around Merano: the apple blossom. By the end of March, the apple orchards transform into a sea of white-pink blossoms, extending into late May, depending on the location. However, this sight is not just a treat for the eyes but for all the senses. The enchanting fragrance of the blooming flowers is distinctly noticeable, evoking feelings of spring.
When does the apple blossom season start in South Tyrol?
The exact timing depends on weather and temperature. Typically, the first blossoms appear in late March in the Adige Valley and last until late May in the higher regions.
What makes the apple blossom so special?
During frosty nights, farmers often use “frost irrigation”: by spraying water onto the delicate blossoms, a thin ice layer forms to protect them from freezing. When the sun rises, the icy coating sparkles in the light – a magical sight and a dream for photographers.
Are apple trees the only ones in bloom?
Not at all! In spring, Merano becomes a true garden of colors. Cherry trees, stone fruit blossoms, magnolias and countless flowering shrubs transform the city’s parks and promenades into a breathtaking floral paradise.
