Some of South Tyrol’s most beautiful motorcycle routes start right from the Meranerhof and lead directly into the surrounding Alpine landscape. Which tour we recommend depends less on how famous a mountain pass is and more on your riding experience, the time available and the kind of day you would like to spend on the road.
For leisurely riders: the Ultental Valley
If you prefer a relaxed ride with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, we recommend a tour through the Ultental Valley. The route is relatively quiet, offers varied landscapes and is a great choice for a shorter ride from Merano. For us, it is a pleasant alternative to the better-known mountain passes when enjoying the journey matters more than tackling as many hairpin bends as possible.
For a varied day out: Gampen Pass and Mendel Pass
Gampen Pass and Mendel Pass can be combined into a beautiful circular tour from Merano. Winding roads, changing landscapes and views across the Adige Valley make this route particularly enjoyable. If you have more time, you can also include a detour to Lake Caldaro.
For experienced riders: Stelvio Pass
Stelvio Pass is one of the great classics of the Alps and, with its numerous tight hairpin bends, is best suited to experienced motorcyclists. Our recommendation: set off before 9:00 am if possible and choose a weekday. On the Stelvio, it is often the traffic rather than the road itself that presents the greatest challenge.
Our tip for those who prefer quieter routes
Jaufen Pass is sometimes overshadowed by South Tyrol’s more famous Alpine passes. The varied route towards Vipiteno is particularly rewarding for experienced riders looking for a beautiful mountain road away from the best-known motorcycle routes.
